They say "when in Rome do as the Romans" . Likewise, when in Guhagar, forget pasta-burger-pizza, thumbs-up, coke , pepsi etc etc all junk food and relish on typical Kokani food. There are innumerable variety of vegetarian as well as non-vegetarian dishes out there. From fruits like alphanso-mango, sweet coconut ( Mohach Naral ) , jackfruit to wild boar meat everything is available here !

All that you need to do is read this page carefully and order your food when you actually reach Guhagar.


DRINK

Plain Water

Plain water is often served everytime you eat. Unlike in western countries , water is preferred instead of soft drink , cola etc etc at the time of having food. Due to the tropical climate your body also needs more water. Specially during summer season is advisable to drink more water. If you are traveling extensively , drink more water to avoid frequent headache.

Coconut Water

Coconut water is very healthy natural drink and easily available here. Very useful to patients of urological deceases.

Tea

Tea is very popular here. Everyone drinks tea every 4 to 5 hours daily. Tea is always mixed with buffalo milk and sugar . Its never made without buffalo milk and sugar.

LUNCH AND DINNER

Main course of dinner as well as lunch is Thali

Thali is normally preferred as lunch or dinner. There are two options in thali. One is vegetarian thali and non-vegetarian thali. Here in Guhagar fish, egg, is considered as non-vegetarian . And milk , curd, buttermilk, butter, cheese is considerd as vegetarian. Please note that a cow is considered holy in India. So eating beef or any of its dish is prohibited. We request you to respect our sentiments.

Typical vegetarian thali consists of

One bowl plain rice ( Called Bhat in local language)

One bowl dry vegetable ( Suki Bhaji)

One bowl vegetable with gravy ( pattal Bhaji)

One bowl curry ( Amti )

Two Indian bread made of wheat ( Poli or Chapati)

Curd ( Dhahi )

Cucumber , raw cut onions, pickle etc etc


Typical non-vegetarian thali consists of

One bowl plain rice ( Called Bhat in local language)

One bowl of non-vegetarian piece . It might be Hen, Goat, Sheep, wild bore, locally available fish etc etc )

Two Indian bread made of wheat ( Poli or Capati)

Curd ( Dhahi ) or buttermilk ( Taak)

Misal Pav a popular snack ( Spicy )

Misal with bread is a popular snack here. Misal is normally made in spicy red curry.

Kande Pohe

Kandepohe is very popular snack in this area. Some times served with pickle and curd . It is very common to have Kandepohe as morning breakfast followed by a cup of tea. Kandepohe is also served as supper ( Evening time between say 16.30 to 19.00 hrs). Kandepohe ( Kande = Onion and Pohe = Rice flakes ) is dried rice flakes beked with cut onion.

Batata Wada

Batata wada simply means potato pattice. Mashed Potatos are fryed in vegetable oil. To make it more tasty , manytimes Chatny ( Spicy sauce made in Coconut gravy ) or Sambar ( Spice gravy ) is also served. Sometimes Batat wada is served with bread ( called Wadapav. This is also very popular ). Wadapav simply means Indian burger. As this is very popular snack , Batatawada can be eaten any time of a day.

Fruits

Alphanso Mangoes ( called Hapus Amba in Marathi language) . Available only during summer ( April end to June second week ). Alphanso mangoes from this region are world famous. Sweet and really mouth watering.

Jackfruit ( called Fanas ). There are 2 main types of jackfruit 1. Kapa jackfruit 2. Barka jackfruit .

Banana ( Called Keli ) Try sonkeli . Sonkeli are small in size but they are very sweet.
